Maine Paper Mill to Permanently Shut in Q1 2023

It must be noted that the mill has been the town’s biggest private employer.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Pennsylvania-headquartered Pixelle Specialty Solutions announced that its Jay, Maine paper mill on the banks of the Androscoggin River will shut operations in the first quarter of 2023. The announcement to this effect was made by Town Manager Shiloh LaFreniere.

According to her, the immediate concern of the authorities would be the welfare of the workers and their families as well as the community members that will be affected by the closing.

A statement issued by Gov. Janet Mills noted that the state had offered its support to try to keep the mill open, but the company management said that they could not do anything, as it was unsustainable for the company to survive in the prevailing difficult economic conditions. Furthermore, the statement expressed deep concerns with regards to the livelihoods and well-being of those who work at the mill.

The Labor Commissioner has been directed to send a Rapid Response Team in support of the millworkers to provide all available resources to them and their families. Meantime, the company assure that all employees will be paid health care benefits and severance pay following the end of their employment in 2023.
