Pictou County Paper Mill to Undergo Complete Transformation

Furthermore, it intends to remove detectable odours during the time of operation of the mill.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Paper Excellence has proposed “complete transformation” of its operations at is Northern Pulp Mill in Nova Scotia, aimed at restarting the idled plant. The plant stopped operations during January last year, following the provincial ban on dumping effluents.

According to Paper Excellence, the proposed $350 million transformation plan aims to cut water consumption at the mill by almost 50%. It also targets 75% reduction in wastewater components and lowering of visible plumes above the mill by 70%. Furthermore, it intends to remove detectable odours during the time of operation of the mill.

Town of Pictou Mayor Jim Ryan expressed deep concerns over the delay in proposal to address the environmental damages caused by mill operations to the neighbouring community. The authorities will ensure that no treated or untreated effluent directly reaches the harbour. He said that the local community is extremely pleased with the improved air quality post closing of mill operations last year. Although economic impact due to mill closure is a concern, the administration is equally concerned about the health of people and environment, Ryan added.

Meantime, the union representing laid-off mill workers welcomed the company’s plan to transform Northern Pulp mill into one of the world’s cleanest mills.
