SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading UK retailer Currys PC World built a huge pyramid of washing machines collected as part of its “New Life Not Landfill” mission, which aims to recycle, repair or rehome such devices, thereby preventing it from ending up in landfills. The largest-ever pyramid of washing machines made its way into the Guinness Book of Records as well.
The initiative was led by Darren Kenworthy, Store Manager-Bolton. The store employees stacked a total of 1,490 used washing machines, equivalent to 104.3 tonnes of WEEE recycling, by weight. The retailer had collected old white goods through various outlets including used exchange platforms and store drop-off points.

Commenting on the milestone achievement, Chris Brown, Senior Sustainability Manager, Currys PC World hoped that the new world record pyramid installation will play a key role in helping Brits to realize the importance of recycling their technology. The tower will drive awareness about the growing e-waste problem in the UK and encourage customers to recycle tech, whether big or small.
Currys PC World has recycled over 750,000 tonnes of tech since its inception in 2007. During the previous year, it accounted for 43% of UK’s total collected waste.
