The Chinese mining companies have been operating in Zimbabwe, by taking advantage of the loopholes in the country’s mining law.
SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The indiscriminate mining activities by Chinese companies that lack proper social and environmental assessment have resulted in significant increase in environmental and infrastructure degradation in Zimbabwe. The latest report published by InsideOver says that indiscriminate mining has become a matter of huge concern in the country.
The mining in the mineral-rich Great Dyke region have left trials of open pits which have now become death traps for humans and livestock. Also, communities allege that the operations of White ASB Gold Mine have encroached into the Dohwe River catchment. The use of heavy equipment has led to massive environmental destruction. Moreover, the increased use of mercury in mining activities poses threat to health and safety of communities living in the downstream areas.

The Chinese mining companies have been operating in Zimbabwe, by taking advantage of the loopholes in the country’s mining law. Meantime, the Chinese embassy stated that the companies are operating towards betterment of the country.
As per estimates, China currently imports approximately $100 billion worth of base metals from the African region.
